Intra-oral scanning technology enables the dentist to create a virtual, computer-generated replica of teeth plus soft tissues in the mouth, without the need of using impression materials which patients often find it to be inconvenient and messy.

Digital workflow is predictable, efficient and fast – the technology captures clear and highly accurate impression data in mere minutes.

As an Intra-oral scanner (IOS) user, I would like to share my experience of using Intra-oral scanning in daily dentistry such as coronal restorations, removable dentures, implant supported prostheses and clear aligners.

Restorative works of inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges involve direct scanning of teeth preparation, often requires only quadrant scan.

Digital impression workflow for implant prosthetics will be explored in more detail both in quadrant scans for single tooth implant using a scan body, which comprise majority of all cases, as well as full arch scans of multiple implants using only one single or more scanning bodies.

As for clear aligners cases, a full arch scan of both upper and lower jaws can be challenging at times but can be overcome even in most difficult of situations. Full arch scans are indicated for retainer cases as well.

And together with digital radiographs, development of Artificial Intelligence to provide complete examination and diagnosis and treatment planning would be possible during dental check-ups.
